Barb Armstrong

I began my creative career as a graphic designer, working for 15 years at Sotheby’s, BBDO Advertising, and several New York City design studios before spending more than 20 years in corporate roles. My return to the arts began through volunteer and staff positions at ArtsWestchester, where close engagement with artists, exhibitions, and visitors renewed my interest in painting.

My work is rooted in abstract expressionism and shaped by my background in design, with composition, color, negative space, and mixed media at the center of my practice. While I sometimes begin with reference material, intuition plays an essential role in guiding my palette, mark-making, and direction. I am especially interested in the space between realism and abstraction, where experimentation continues to open new possibilities in my work.
